Learn a language quiz-style
Those who already know some of a language and want to revise their knowledge and pick up a few new words and phrases.
Languages offered are French, German, Dutch, Indonesian and Chinese (Mandarin). There are the categories: Basics, Problems, Numbers and Time. For each language, you answer questions in English, such as “What is your name?” and choose from three multiple choice answers in the selected language.
Unfortunately, I found this app to be only good for revising vocabulary I already knew, rather than learning any new grammar or vocabulary.
You could—if you really had nothing better to do—make use of the answer choices to simply memorise new sentences, but there are much more efficient and interesting methods of learning.
If your initial knowledge of the language is zero, chances are this app can’t help you learn enough to talk to strangers at a café.
Another disappointing flaw is the lack of audio. It’s essential to hear a language to know how to pronounce words.
For those unfamiliar with the written characters of a language (for example, if you can read Hindi and English, and want to learn Mandarin), this app wouldn’t be useful at all, because the multiple-choice questions are in the characters of the language you want to learn, with no audio.
Lastly, answering the questions can get boring quickly as the questions are quite repetitive.
In all, not a terrible app, but I would prefer the old-fashioned way of learning from a textbook with an accompanying CD even!
